Meet Tombo (the fatty) and Largo (the skinny) - Coloring with Photoshop

Here are my first attempts at coloring characters in Photoshop. I love traditional art and I never thought I would adventure into any other form. However, I think as an artist, it is important to try all mediums and explore different techniques. They are all venues to express creativity and you can't tell if you like something until you try it.

Creating art digitally versus traditionally is, in my opinion, two very different skills. Both come with its cons and pros. I hope to be the kind of artist that can grab something as simple as a pencil and draw something that is fairly good without the aid of a digital product. You never know when that computer might die on you and you don't have money to buy a new one. Do you stop drawing? Can you really draw without that computer?

Nonetheless, I think a mix of traditional and digital is a great combination. I love the effects that can be created with software. It is probably something I could hardly achieve if I tried to do it by hand. I think I will give a chance to this form of creating. I do believe, however, that we are loosing a lot of the traditional way of doing things in art, due to the explosion of digital media, and I think that is somewhat sad. There is a magic to traditional art and the process and dedication it takes to complete one piece. But I am one of those people that believes in cycles and what is hot today will not be so later which means that someday we might see more demand for traditional art again and by then, there will be very few people out there who can actually pick up a pencil and just draw. For my part, I'll aim to be somewhat well-versed in both and never stop learning new things while still keeping in touch with the old.
